The Difference Between a Federal Judge and a Federal Magistrate Judge
A federal magistrate is selected by the judges in that district, not by the president. In districts across the country, it's routine to take a request for a search warrant to a magistrate judge. But of course, the action that the magistrate judge takes can ultimately be reviewed when issues come up at trial about what evidence is admissible.
