The Inquisition and the Roman Catholic Church

The word inquisition was a legal technique rather than anything specifically associated with religion and certainly not with the church. It's a principle in which you question people, not in an adversarial way like a cross-examination but with a list of questions determined to find out some truth about a crime or whatever it might be. Which is running in the Roman Empire way before the fourth century. In medieval Europe this way of doing things survives. And in other contexts in England for example into the properties of deceased people for example in medieval England.
