The New Historicism of Literary Art Criticism
The movement has often been described as new historicism to distinguish it from traditional historicist approaches. It actually grew up alongside the development of the great historical novels of the 19th century, I mean Walter Scott and George Eliot. And similarly, literary art criticism was quite interested in those local moments but they seemed precisely to be a kind of historical study that closed off the past. We wanted somehow to create a conversation or dialectic between that past and this present.
