Is There a Rebalancing of Relations?
Stephen Yates: I do think that there is going to be a rebalancing of relations among great powers and in our alliances themselves. It's very, very clear at this point that China has the capability to destroy Taiwan if it chose todestroy major military elements of the United States and our allies if it choseto. And so there's kind of a multiple-layer challenge here of a constantly evolving democracy in Taiwan,. regional powers that are also democratic and evolving who may want to have more of a say in their own defense. If the U.S. is not providing for the global commons or their defense, they will find ways to do so themselves.
