The Monkey Wrench Gang

As a novelist, I think Edward Abbey was kind of, let's just say that wasn't his real talent as far as I was concerned. But he wrote one novel called The Monkey Wrench Gang and it inspired people to start this sort of grassroots ground level group called Earth First. This is in the 80s. They were not hierarchical, not directed, very loosely organized, worked with false names and all that. So if anyone got arrested, they actually couldn't turn anyone else in. And of course, there's some similarities to terrorist groups here and what they were doing was very destructive,. although they were very careful never to hurt anyone.
