Dracula and Frankenstein
When Universal were green lighting Dracula and then Frankenstein, they were looking to well-established literary properties that had also been Broadway plays. I don't think it's until the sequels to Dracula and Frankenstein, that people could go to a studio head and say, let's make a horror film. The very mention of the name brings to mind things so evil, so fantastic, so degrading. You wonder if it isn't all a dream, a nightmare.
