The Problem of Paris
Paris in 18 50 was a rabbits warren of narrow streets surrounded by haphazard buildings, aimlessly constructed. The city was dark, unhealthy, unsan tary with dank clusters of inhospitable slums and virtually no green spaces. Nowhere were the state driven bonapartis infa structure projects more visionary, more costly and more permanently visible than in paris itself.
