President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address in November 1863. The speech was a stark reminder that self-government and freedom were at stake, says Julian Zelizer. At the time of his address, four months had passed since the Battle of Gettysburg. Union forces continued to outnumber Confederates two to one, writes Zelizer.
