In March of 94, Barbara Bush asked David Gergen to be her new chief of staff. He said he had no idea how to do the job and was in denial about finding a replacement. Gergen: "I've been waiting for you to walk into my office and tell me that you found a Chief of Staff" The former President's first post-White House chief of staff Rosa Maria told him she would retire after one year.
