Mary met her husband using a 1960s computer dating service wall. Walt Coburn was an extremely violent paranoid schizophrenic that Mary hitched up with after only knowing him for a month or two and it was only after the marriage that Mary found out that Walt was highly suspected of killing his first wife by hanging her then staging it to look like a suicide. The coral candy company did not survive the stresses that came along with Mary's marriage to a psychotic sailor so Dean was forced to take over as owner.
