The Great Persecution
The persecution of christians was no holycost, but that should not detract from the horrific nature of the anti christian programms. Torture, imprisonment or one way ticket to hard labor in the mines, were alternatives to execution. The feeling of vulnerability may also have contributed to the zeal with which christians started persecuting pagans and each other. Constantine famously defeated macentius at the battle of the milvian bridge, where his soldiers fought with the symbol of christ on their shields.
