The word deaf is really quite loaded in any community. The translation of deafness in Malihalam is, you know, it implies that you're more than deaf. It almost seems to go with deaf and so there's a pejorative aspect to you. So hearing impaired is great. It doesn't still... it doesn't restore your hearing, but it makes you feel a little better about what's going on then to be labeled deaf.
