The Power of Feature Learning in Machine Learning
The idea that you can featureize the world or turn something that doesn't look quantitative into a list of numbers is an old concept. In computer vision in particular, it has a very long tradition. Every major pharma company is using these types of models on images of cells. And this can be useful in really surprising ways, because the features can tell you something surprising about what you're looking at that you might not have originally been able to discover.
