Myelination of Axons

Eight or nine year-old has a similar brain overall volume size as an adult brain but the composition of that brain changes hugely. Both white matter and gray matter undergo very large amounts of development in humans during childhood and adolescence. White matter is found mostly in the center of the brain it comprises long fibers called axons which are covered with a substance called myelin so they allow neurons to communicate with each other.
