The Importance of Analogies in Languages
Think well first requires knowing a lot of stuff. Whatever aspect of what you learn, your mind dwells on will be the part that is likely to be retained. Willingham suggests using many examples to ground a particular abstraction in concrete terms before moving on. The only way to become good at skills is to practise them. Some basic skills require thorough practice in order to become successful at more skills. Merely practicing material isn't enough - it can be painfully dull. Early training and late training are fundamentally different.
