Arthur harris was a 50 year old career soldier with one of the world's largest and deadliest air forces. Flying missions over germany was a notoriously deadly gig. Air crews had to wear jump suits that were electrically heated to keep from freezing. Some even resorted to wearing ladies silk stockings under their jump suits just to get a little bit warmer. The job wasn't just a physically taxing experience, it required an almost superhuman level of mental discipline.
