Celeste asked janie why her friends were reluctant to confront matthew. Why did they put up with all this over the top creepiness that we've just heard them describe right from the very beginning? She says a relationship with matthew was hard to give up. celeste: In many cases, people who fail to hold men accountable do so because there's something they believe they're getting from this man. That's not really the case with matthew, because the stakes aren't that tangible. So why would people let thes sky off the hook? I asked janie to reflect on that.
Several years after Janey was sexually assaulted by her former boyfriend, Mathew, she told some of her closest friends, and her mother, what Mathew had done. Janey was so troubled by her loved ones’ responses that she went back to them years later to record conversations about it all. In this episode: Janey’s story, and philosopher Kate Manne, who coined the term “himpathy” in her 2017 book, “Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny.” With co-hosts John Biewen and Celeste Headlee. Part of our summer mini-season of rebroadcasts.
