I find most frustrating listening to debate about China in Britain is the fact that there is no historic awareness. The first British person who is recorded to have, you know, learnt Chinese, I think his name was James Flint. And he was rewarded by that for going to Beijing and daring to try and get an audience with the Emperor in about 1756. He was shut in jail for four years and then booted out of the country.
