Lady Nijo's Tasugatari Is a Book Review
Tasugatari is one of few pre modern texts that includes not just the absolute best poems out there, but some pretty average and even crappy ones. The narrative gives us a look at poetry as it was actually composed by lady nijo. My personal favorite moment is when on her way to izkushima she comes across a small village of women who had previously made their living as sex workers. They collectively renounced the profession to take up a life of devotion to the buddhas in hopes of a better rebirth.
