The Mercater Projection Is a Great Back Drop

Mercater was not the first person to do this. Ptolemy also made maps in which north was up. There is an argument that the mercator projections ubiquity, combined with these size differences and europe being roughly in the middle, makes this a particularly eurocentric map. In western culture, bigger is often seen as better, and things on top are often seen as more important than things on the bottom. The continent of africa is larger than the united state, india and china combined. Antarctic also looks truly enormous.
