The Origins of Science Fiction in the 20th Century

A lot of historical accounts trace the origins of science fiction to the early 20th century. But there are definitely some important precursors that predate this time period. For instance, Shelley Frankenstein could be described as the first work of science fiction as such. And I think there's something specific about the 20th century that provides the conditions for the making explicit of science fiction.
