The Things That Carried Him
The Things That Carried Him is about Sergeant Joe Montgomery, the 3,431st member of the US military who was killed during the Iraq War. The story traces the journey of Montgomery's body from a street in Baghdad to a cemetery in Scottsburg, Indiana. It's a wonderful piece of writing that appeared in an issue of Esquire that had Jessica Simpson on the cover. One of the best parts of my job is getting to hear how a story like this came together.
