Introduction
By the end of 2021, diagnosis of infectious syphilis had already returned to pre-pandemic levels. It has been estimated that in the 18th century, one in five of the population of London had syphilis. Henry VIII, Beethoven and Al Capone were all diagnosed with it at various points in history. Kate Lister talks to Kat Irving about how people with it have been perceived.
