In the nineties, programmers had to be very good at writing machine code because there was no way you could write in a high level programming language. But it also forced you to do an awful lot of uninteresting housekeeping and Debugging. "I sometimes lament that this enormous capacity that computers have now is basically a bottomless pit," he says.
