In 1952, Barry Goldwater won election to the Senate from Arizona. He quickly gained prominence for his willingness to attack Dwight D. Eisenhower. His real issue was that Eisenhower supported forcibly integrating schools. Today conservatives will defend both he and Phyllis Schlafly as anti-integration.
