The Adelson checkerboard was created by MIT vision researcher Edward Adelson in the 90s. The contourless figure is like cutting a pie slice out of three circles and orienting them so that each one forms what appears to be the corner of a coherent square. But if you stop and think about it, there's no line whatsoever that makes that square.
