Drowning happened so regularly in England along the river Thames that there was actually a special society formed and funded to promote the resuscitation of drowned people society. Members of this group would walk along the banks of the river with their tobacco smoke and a makit in case they stumbled upon a person who needed help. The idea behind this medical treatment was that it would do two things. Number one, it would warm up the drowned victim; number two, make your butthole burn.
