How to Surprise an in Franchise Reader
Sometimes you can use a reader's enfranchisement against them, which is great. You have to be careful though if you're using a trope specifically to subvert it because if you do it wrong, all it will do is make people mad. The enders game is an underdog sports story. You don't expect to get that in a war book about alien invasion. And so the take away for that then is you know you can go and find those kind of tropes and use those kind of things to trick your own enfranchised readers in some other way.
