In February 1942, Lieutenant General John Elderwit reported to President Franklin D. Roosevelt that no sabotage by Japanese Americans had yet been detected. The military was then able to remove any and all persons they chose from those areas without trial or hearing. In practice, this order was directed at the entire Japanese American community. Norman Tackay's father spent a lot of time informally counseling distressed individuals and families. They were taken to Camp Ruwa, an internment camp surrounded by barbed wire fences. Many internees became depressed. Some attempted to take their own lives.
