Stoic ethics begins with an understanding of natural impulses, animal instincts. When we act in accordance with nature, we are acting rationally for the good of the whole. We intuitively understand these basic moral precepts and expect other human beings to live according to them. To act otherwise is against human nature and therefore irrational.
