The Unrest in Los Angeles
With no police presence, the mob spread beyond Normandy in Florence. By 8 p.m., complete anarchy spread across South Central L.A. and other parts of the city. Liquor stores, grocery stores, retail shops and fast food restaurants were looted, destroyed, and torched. The smoke in the air was so thick that flights heading into Los Angeles Airport had to be re-routed. Governor Pete Wilson ordered 2,000 National Guard Reserve soldiers to the area.
