Benedict Arnold and the American mosquito fleet really attempted to hold important lakes and waterways for the Americans as well. He was one of these people who immediately had a real strategic sense from the very beginning of the war. And so he realized that we did need control of Fort Ticonderoga at the southern end of Lake Champlain if we were going to control this quarter of water. It contributed to the fact that the French would come in, but as would be proven, that didn't necessarily mean victory within reach.
