You've studied three ancient languages, and found more effective ways to study them since university. You're only taking a chunk of it, so you're not really learning the whole language. And that's true in the teaching of so many ancient languages. Most people who learn latin in school just learn it for reading. But i was good at reading latin, but i could never even thought about trying to think in it.
