Film School: What's the Difference Between Diegetic and Non-Diegetic?

There's this melodic humming that you hear Wendy doing at the beginning of the film and then it's several points in the film and in the very final scene. And also in this particular instance, it created a kind of almost a feeling of dread in me. I think that those editorial choices do two things. It creates that sense where you're just watching something happen rather than being propelled forward by the narrative. You're actually kind of just watching a slice of life.
