The Case of Duelling
The last duel in england, which i believe was between the two members of parliament for canterbury in 18 52 or so, was described in mocking terms. The case of duelling tells us something extremely important about honour because there were internal changes in the world of honour itself. I think some of them to do with the general democratization of culture and britain in that time. One of the things that became increasingly gentlemanly was a sense of self restraint - all that was very much inconsistent with the kind of violent behavior associated with the duel.
