functional mri is the same machine that does emori for you. Instead of measuring tissue, we're measuring changes in brain metabolism. Changes in oxygenation levels affects a locala magnetic field and this is picked up by the scanner. The reason that is different from pet is that it's not invasive. It can peer into people's brains without doing anything to them evasively.
