Wells, a man of great brilliance, contained, if not multitudes, though certainly more thana whitman, at least deeply and irreconcilably different mental tendencies and philosophical tendencies. There was an official part of his mind that put straightforward supposed rational arguments, mostly about the betterments of society and his fellow men.
