Pence is historically significant to this day, i think, as a reporter. If he does what trump wants and tries to delay it or smear it, you could see the united states having a constitutional crisis. He doesn't want to just have some kind of theatrical westwing moment where he breaks ranks with trump. The insurrection was the culmination and final enning of something that had been going on. People forget specifics, but it's in the book.
