Last year after the Veldi school shootings, we did see the federal government enact new gun legislation for the first time in 30 years. It was an encouragement for red flag laws that would identify individuals who might be at risk of violence or committing violence and prevent them from owning firearms. We are in a very different world in the United States from 1994, when America did pass an assault weapons ban with 52 senators signing on to have a 10-year ban. When that ban expired in 2004, the number of mass shootings started picking up again. The most effective thing that could happen in the US beyond background checks is a ban on what people on the left call weapons of war.
