Ed White is the FT's China correspondent. He has been trying to understand why China's consumer economy just won't kickstart. The COVID situation made it a lot worse because you then had disruptions, he says. Four of those people have returned back to their hometowns and got jobs as civil servants. That is the sort of thing that China should be able to do.
