What Drew Your Interest in Russia and Eastern Europe?
I was always fascinated about how people of the older generation could grow up, be trained in a certain ideology and then watch that entire ideology fall apart in front of their eyes. I started studying, getting really interested in Russia a couple years prior to the annexation of Crimea. If Putin's ambitions and dreams had been revealed kind of at the time, it probably would not have been politically popular. And I don't think Yeltsin would have named him as a successor.
