Is There Any Particular Origin of Soda Bread?

Brian and Trudy both recognised the bread as being Irish. They also had soda bread, which was a different type of malted bread. It wasn't authentic - it was like a cross between Vida bread and soda bread. The pair were in Belfast when they went to Farmer's Daughters for dinner.
