In 1948, when the US population was 146.6 million, US Steel factories nationwide employed 700,000 workers. By 1977, US Steel's south works employed less than 8,000 down from their normal workforce of 11,000 just before then. Between 1979 and 1986, about 16,000 Chicago-area steelworkers lost their jobs. On January 9, 1992, it was announced that the south work site would close after more than 100 years in operation.
