The League of Nations and International Development
The origins of international development as we know it are mostly a post-1945 phenomenon. But the League does experiment with these, what I see as these kind of originary projects. One that I focus on a lot in the book takes place in Greece in the 1920s. The League gets involved in channeling this major foreign loan to Greece to help with the settlement of these refugees. This is not seen at the time as a humanitarian project or as a project of relief. Instead, all the money has to be spent on infrastructural development and agricultural modernization.
