The History of Cowpox
Smallpox was one of the first contagious diseases to be completely eradicated by vaccines. The word vaccine is derived from those events. In 1800s, another type of pox became common in England called cowpox. Since cowpox had milder symptoms, it turned out to be a very effective way of preventing smallpox.
