It takes a lot to get them really close together because they are repel each other through the electromagnetic force. So that's kind of where suns come in, right? If you have a bunch of hydrogen out there in space, gravity pulls it all together and squeezes those protons close enough so close together that eventually the strong force takes over to protons merge. You sort of dot, dot, dot it over a few critical elements there.
