The manhole cover was a symbol of centering and wholeness, says author Tom Charity. Carved into the metal plates by workers in New York City's sewers, they are heavy but can be lifted with huge trucks. The round covers connect to the underworld - coal delivery or sewers -- so there is a kind of connection between above and below. "It enabled me to start really dealing with some of the muck in me that had been churned up in moving to NYC"
