Carved into the metal plates by workers in New York City's sewers, they are heavy but can be lifted with huge trucks. The round covers connect to the underworld - coal delivery or sewers -- so there is a kind of connection between above and below. "It enabled me to start really dealing with some of the muck in me that had been churned up in moving to NYC"
