The Vagus Nerve and the Immune System

The device that Kelly has implanted I would call a generation one device. It's very much like a cardiac pacemaker. Its implanted under the collar bone and then a wire a lead is channeled up into the neck area where the vagus nerve is. The vagus nerve originates in the bottom of your brain at about the level of your eardrum, travels down through the neck and it touches all the organs in your body pretty much. And some 25 years ago my lab discovered that these very same signals in the Vagus nerve also control the immune system.
