When you have a very discreet pitch, like from a gunshot that's been damaged, even temporarily, the brain is receiving great input. The best way i know to provide an analogy to this is like a phantom limb cyndrome. Some one loses a limb, and they perceive pain in a limb that's no longer there. Your your brain is searching for sensory input that's not coming. And so it's getting all great stimulation, and it's searching for a signal that's not come and it manufactures this ringing.
