In the ancient world, places were more grouped together by water than they were by land. Northern europe was a world away from the mediterranean and northern Italy. The parts of gaul that were close to rome had started to become what they would call "mediterraneanized" But further north you go, it's completely foreign - with dense forests and impenetrable swamps.
